What to Expect from Your Counselor

The relationship between you and your counselor is essential for the success of therapy. Research indicates that sixty percent of the benefits of treatment come from a strong therapeutic relationship. You have the right to expect your counselor to keep your information private and confidential. Your counselor should act professionally and, most importantly, respect your autonomy in decision-making. While your counselor may occasionally offer challenging statements, you should always expect these to be presented respectfully, recognizing that you are the ultimate decision-maker in your therapy.

Your counselor will work closely with you to set goals, listen attentively to your story, and ask clarifying questions when necessary. They may also assign “homework” to be completed outside of sessions. This collaborative approach not only fosters momentum for change but also empowers you to actively engage in your own healing process. Completing homework is always your choice. Ultimately, counseling is a partnership focused on helping you achieve your goals.
